25TH IULTCS CONGRESS, CHENNAI (27TH JANUARY TO 30TH JANUARY, 1999)

The last Congress of the 20th Century for International Union of Leather Technologists & Chemists Societies (IULTCS) was organized at Chennai on from 27th - 30th January, 1999. Irt was a great success and achievements. Governor of Tamil Nadu, Ms. Justice Fathima Beevi inaugurated the XXV – IULTCS Congress on 27th January, 1999 at the Triple Helix Auditorium of CLRI – Madras. The theme of the Congress was “Science & Technology needs of the Leather Industry into the next millennium”.

The Congress was attended by more than 400 professionals from 21 countries and 10 delegates from 20 overseas nations. Besides the eminent scientists, chemists, technologists, research scholars and business people of leather industries participated in this land mark event of the century from 27th January to 30th January, 1999.

Earlier as a part of the XXV – IULTCS Congress, three satellite meetings were organized at Chennai, Calcutta and New Delhi on 25th January, 1999 on three different themes to focus the deliberations of interest from IULTCS Congress.

The deliberations at Chennai on “Trends on Collagen” was aimed at promoting ideas of scientific & technological advancement on Collagen research and stimulating the application in newer horizon updating the manufacturing of leather processing. The basic issues of importance in future research on collagen have also been emphasized.

The meeting at Calcutta on “Cleaner Productions” invited the attentions to the environmental pollutions and treatment on tannery wastes which are causing industrial hazards to the human beings and the surroundings. Eco-friendly technology has been recommended replacing the traditional methods for leather processing.

The meeting at New Delhi on “New Education Technology” called for a comprehensive action plan for Human Research Development to sustain and expand the leather industrial sector in the country. It has emphasized the needs for curriculae reforms at different levels of educational technology and strengthening links between the industries and institutions.

The IULTCS Congress during the period from 27th Jan. to 30th Jan., 1999 discussed wide range of issues concerning leather industries and its future strategies of development, keeping in view of the health & safety of industrial workers, ecological environments and human resource development for leather sector and basic infrastructure facilities.

Various hypotheses for understanding the problems of leather industry were presented and discussed. We are confident that the 25th Congress of IULTCS have delivered good number of messages to the leather industries to combat the odds and paved the way to compete and sustain the growth of global environment.
