In memory of our beloved President, Late Sanjoy Sen<\/strong>, who served in this esteemed position for several decades, we have been organizing the \u2018Sanjoy Sen Memorial Lecture\u2019<\/strong> every year on 14th January<\/strong>, his birthday, since 2003<\/strong>.<\/p>

Biography of Late Sanjoy Sen<\/strong><\/h3>

Late Sanjoy Sen<\/strong> was born on 14th January 1926<\/strong>. He completed his Master of Science in Chemical Engineering<\/strong> from the United States of America<\/strong>.<\/p>

After returning from the U.S., he successfully expanded the National Tannery Co. Ltd.<\/strong>, which had been founded by his grandfather, Sir Nil Ratan Sarkar<\/strong>. Under his leadership, the company grew into the largest tannery in India<\/strong> and became one of the country\u2019s foremost exporters<\/strong> during the pioneering days of India’s export sector.<\/p>

Mr. Sen was widely regarded as an authority on the Leather and Leather Manufacturers industry<\/strong>, especially in matters related to exports<\/strong>. He served as Chairman of the Export Promotion Council for Finished Leather & Leather Manufacturers, Kanpur<\/strong>, for over a decade. This organization is now known as the Council for Leather Exports<\/strong>. He also held the post of Chairman of the Leather Development Council<\/strong>, an institution set up by the Ministry of Industry, Government of India<\/strong>.<\/p>

In addition, Mr. Sen was a stalwart figure in leather education and research. He was:<\/p>

  • President of the Indian Leather Technologists\u2019 Association<\/strong><\/li>
  • Chairman of the Governing Body of the College of Leather Technology<\/strong><\/li>
  • Chairman of the Research Council of the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai<\/strong><\/li>
  • President of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies, Geneva (1999)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>

    He played a pivotal role on international platforms, notably as:<\/p>

    • Chairman of the Third Consultation Committee of the Leather & Leather Products Industry<\/strong> organized by UNIDO<\/strong> in 1984<\/strong><\/li>
    • Expert and Consultant for Leather & Leather Products<\/strong> for UNIDO \u2013 Vienna<\/strong>, serving on multiple occasions<\/li>
    • Member of UNIDO\u2019s Leather Industry Panel<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>

      His contributions extended beyond leather to the engineering sector<\/strong>. He:<\/p>

      • Pioneered the export of bicycles from India<\/strong> to various countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/li>
      • Served as President of the Indian Engineering Association<\/strong> (now the Confederation of Indian Industry<\/strong>)<\/li>
      • Was Chairman of the Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search<\/strong> for nearly 25 years<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>

        Throughout his distinguished and versatile career as an entrepreneur, industrialist, and technocrat<\/strong>, Mr. Sen was recognized by both the Government<\/strong> and the industry<\/strong> as a leading expert in export promotion<\/strong>. His deep expertise led to appointments to the boards of:<\/p>

        • Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation (ECGC)<\/strong><\/li>
        • Trade Development Authority<\/strong><\/li>
        • India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC)<\/strong><\/li>
        • Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT)<\/strong><\/li>
        • Indian Standards Institution<\/strong><\/li>
        • Chairman, ISO \u2013 Geneva<\/strong><\/li>
        • Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>

          Late Sanjoy Sen passed away on 31st August 2001<\/strong>, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of excellence, leadership, and service.<\/p>
