🌍 IULTCS Congress: A Global Forum for Leather Science

What is IULTCS?

The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) is the most distinguished global body that connects leather technologists, chemists, researchers, and academics from across the world. Originally formed in 1897 and officially federated in 1948, IULTCS has played a critical role in:

  • Advancing leather science and technology
  • Establishing global testing methods and best practices
  • Organizing biennial International Congresses to promote scientific exchange and innovation

Today, IULTCS comprises 18 national member societies and 5 associate members, representing more than 3,000 professionals worldwide. Its Congress is the flagship event of the leather world, held every two years in different countries, where experts deliberate on the latest scientific breakthroughs, technological advancements, and environmental strategies shaping the future of the global leather industry.

The Indian Leather Technologists’ Association (ILTA), founded in 1950, is India’s foremost professional body representing leather technologists, scientists, educators, and industry experts. As a full member of IULTCS, ILTA has been instrumental in promoting leather science in India, fostering international cooperation, and advocating sustainable, innovative practices in the leather industry.

ILTA’s vision is to serve as a bridge between science, industry, and society—supporting capacity building, research excellence, and environmental responsibility. Its commitment to international collaboration has been most prominently demonstrated by its successful organization of two globally significant IULTCS Congresses in 1999 and 2017, both held in Chennai.

A Landmark Event

The 25th IULTCS Congress, held from January 27 to 30, 1999, in Chennai, was a historic event for both ILTA and India. It was the first time this prestigious global event was hosted in India and also the final IULTCS Congress of the 20th century.

The Congress was jointly organized by ILTA and CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), and inaugurated by the then Governor of Tamil Nadu, Hon’ble Justice Fathima Beevi, at CLRI’s Triple Helix Auditorium. The event attracted over 400 delegates from 21 countries, including eminent scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and academics.

ILTA’s Pioneering Contributions

ILTA’s leadership was the cornerstone of this Congress’s success. Its contributions included:

  • Strategic Planning: Led India’s successful bid to host the Congress, demonstrating the country’s readiness in research capacity and industrial infrastructure.
  • Scientific Direction: Curated the Congress theme and designed its program to address future challenges of the leather sector in science, technology, and environmental protection.
  • Satellite Symposia Across Three Cities:
    • Chennai: Trends in Collagen – Exploring innovations in collagen science and its role in leather production.
    • Calcutta: Cleaner Production – Addressing industrial waste, environmental hazards, and sustainable alternatives in tanning.
    • New Delhi: New Education Technology – Emphasizing curriculum reform and the integration of new learning models in leather education.

These sessions collectively showcased ILTA’s commitment to inclusive knowledge dissemination and national outreach.

Scientific & Societal Impact

The Congress laid the groundwork for a new era in leather research and education in India. Key outcomes included:

  • Increased focus on eco-friendly tanning technologies
  • National attention on curriculum reform for leather education
  • Greater awareness of occupational health and worker safety
  • Policy-level dialogues on sustainability and infrastructure development

ILTA’s foresight and coordination helped position India as a credible and capable global player in leather science at the turn of the millennium.
