LEXPO – The Leather Exposition

A Platform for Promotion, Innovation & Public Engagement in the Leather Industry

LEXPO – Leather Exposition, was more than just a trade fair. It was a visionary initiative by the Indian Leather Technologists’ Association (ILTA) that created a unique platform to bring together manufacturers, entrepreneurs, leather technologists, and consumers under one roof. First organized in 1977, this annual fair played a vital role in shaping the leather industry of Kolkata and beyond.

Initially launched as a Buyer-Seller Meet at star hotels, LEXPO evolved over the decades into a full-fledged, open-to-public exposition that catered to both export markets and domestic consumers. With an inclusive approach, it provided equal opportunities for large enterprises as well as small-scale leather industries and emerging entrepreneurs to showcase their products, innovations, and technical advancements.

Historical Evolution of LEXPO

  • 1977: Inception of LEXPO in Kolkata, organized as a high-profile Buyer-Seller Meet in star hotels, focusing on international buyers.
  • 1982: Under the guidance of the Ministry, LEXPO was reoriented to engage directly with the domestic market, allowing greater public participation. The venue shifted from hotels to the open grounds of Kolkata Maidan, which marked the beginning of its journey as a mass-scale public exposition.
  • Subsequent Years: LEXPO expanded to other regions including Siliguri (since 1992), Durgapur (since 2010), and states like Jharkhand (Ranchi, Jamshedpur), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Assam (Guwahati), and Sikkim (Gangtok).
  • 2011 Onwards: The fair venue in Kolkata was relocated from Maidan to Park Circus Maidan, with a brief stopover at the helipad ground near Yuva Bharati Krirangan.
LEXPO Across India

While Kolkata remains the primary location for LEXPO, the fair has expanded its footprint over the decades. It has also been successfully organized in other cities and states to ensure wider reach and inclusivity, including:

  • Siliguri (since 1992)
  • Durgapur (since 2010)
  • Ranchi and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand
  • Bhubaneswar in Odisha
  • Guwahati in Assam
  • Gangtok in Sikkim

This multi-location presence reinforces LEXPO’s role as a national-level exposition, helping small industries across regions connect with potential customers and market opportunities.
